The Sierra M6-1 products are ultra-portable single-port systems that can be purchased either as a protocol analyzer, or as an error injector. Measuring just 6.25" wide, 1.38" high, 9.0" deep (15.9 x 3.5 x 22.9 cm) and weighing in at 1.7 lbs (0.77 Kg), Sierra M6-1 systems are incredibly compact units fitting easily into the corner of a brief case or backpack. Operating at 1.5, 3, or 6 Gb/s SAS or SATA data rates, and available with 2 GB, 4 GB, and 8 GB of recording memory, Sierra M6-1 systems offer world-class protocol verification capability at price points within reach of every budget.

Flexibility to Meet any Debug Challenge

Sierra M6-1 systems come standard with both USB and GbE interface ports for maximum flexibility in connecting to the PC used to host Teledyne LeCroy's SAS/SATA Protocol Suite software. The versatile GbE port can be used for either local or remote network connectivity. Sierra M6-1 systems can be linked together in cascade configurations to provide additional recording channel capacity, enabling simultaneous error injection and trace capture/analysis (requires multiple Sierra M6-1 units, at least one licensed as a protocol analyzer model and one licensed as an error injector).

The Sierra M6-1 data capture capabilities include Easy Mode triggering to provide engineers with the ability to capture precise traffic conditions such as timing between events or changes in link state. Easy Mode triggering conditions can be set up quickly through very straightforward, easily understood drop-down menu selections.

The Sierra M6-1 incorporates 6 Gb/s capable native PHYs for better capture performance in speed negotiation and power management phases.

Compact System Design

Sierra M6-1 products are designed for convenience, portability, and functionality. The front panel provides convenient access to Host and Device data bus connectors and 5 status indicator LEDs for each connectors (Trigger, Error, Link, Speed, Data). The Sierra M6-1 rear panel provides a multifunction connector for External Trigger IN/OUT and SYNC Expansion Port; USB 2.0; 10/100/1000baseT Ethernet; and DC power in connections.

 

Sierra M6-1 SAS/SATA Protocol Suite

Sierra M6-1 models are software compatible with the Teledyne LeCroy SAS/SATA Protocol Suite and offer the same full range of features as the other products in the Teledyne LeCroy SAS/SATA product line. The SAS/SATA Protocol Suite offers an intuitive GUI (Graphical User Interface) combining easy setup with flexible data analysis displays. From the link layer to the application layer, Sierra M6-1 offers a wide range of traffic views and tools to enable engineers to easily zero-in on areas of interest, as follows:

  • Column View shows the handshaking of primitives, and frame composition from SOF to EOF
    • Data can be viewed in 8b/10b or scrambled formats
  • Text View is useful for working at the fame level to show exchanges of frames and accompanying primitives
  • Spreadsheet View shows commands and frames in chronological order and provides the flexibility to easily filter out unwanted primitives or frames to focus on what is important to the issue under investigation
  • Waveform View shows a waveform display for all active ports
    • Useful to perform timing measurements for functions OOB signaling
  • Packet View is specifically designed for analysis of the application layer of a protocol
    • Frames and primitives that are logically part of a specific SAS or SATA command are assembled for quick and easy review
    • Allows users to quickly view command definitions, completion, and status

The capabilities of the SAS/SATA Protocol Suite software are especially useful in addressing system-level debug challenges. Users can quickly drill down on commands to view the frame and link layers. All of the analysis views can be used simultaneously and are automatically synchronized and displayed within one application.

 

Statistical Reports

Statistical reports provide a wealth of statistical and performance reports on events and error counters, as well as performance metrics, providing users with a snapshot into captured traces and rapid access to items of interest.

Sierra M6-1 SAS/SATA InFusion Software

The Sierra M6-1 InFusion model performs as a stand-alone 1.5, 3, 6 Gb/s version of the Teledyne LeCroy InFusion error injector, allowing engineers to modify traffic in order to verify real-world fault handling. While sitting in the data path on a live system, InFusion can programmatically alter or corrupt traffic. The Sierra M6-1 InFusion solution is the ideal tool for stress testing systems while running real traffic and actual workloads.

Sierra M6-1 InFusion is designed to verify recovery characteristics within a sub-system. The user can change any field, within any frame, as the data moves across the link. Any primitive or data pattern can be intercepted and changed to a different specified pattern. This allows for unprecedented corner case and protocol level error injection for SAS and SATA traffic.

The InFusion system will wait for a user configurable time interval or count a particular number of events before it begins modifying frames or injecting errors and it can be configured to send a single error, multiple errors, or random errors. When changing fields within a frame, the InFusion traffic modifier preserves the outbound frame structure, including recalculating the CRC if needed. The response from the device-under-test will pass through the system, without modification. This allows true end-to-end system testing. InFusion software maintains a log that contains a summary of the exchanges.

An easy-to-use pop-up menu interface enables users to start creating test scenarios in just minutes. Dual sequencers support sophisticated error injection strategies with up to 256 sequential wait states per sequence. Each state can be configured to check for different conditions or inject different errors before branching to the next state. Looping allows the error injection sequence to repeat at specific intervals. Each sequential state can also include timers and counters to better isolate specific link conditions.

Serial Attached SCSI (SAS) is the next-generation replacement of SCSI Ultra320. SAS is a serialized protocol. The serial interface offers several benefits over the existing SCSI parallel bus; allowing for high availability, complex storage topologies, and a lower cost structure.
High Availability: As with SATA, Serial Attached SCSI is a high-speed, point-to-point technology initially designed to operate at speeds up to 6Gb/sec. System designers have found that point-to-point serial connections are inherently more reliable than shared bandwidth parallel connections. As a result, point-to-point serial connections have become the preferred method for implementing high-availability systems. SAS based disk drives are dual ported, taking advantage of this feature. This is a key requirement of high-availability SANs that call for redundant paths to all devices in the system.
Complex Storage Environments: SAS storage environments usually consist of a mixture of disk drives, host bus adapters and expanders. SAS allows for addressing of over 16,000 devices. SAS Expanders are routing devices that forward service requests between the source and destination devices. Expanders can be attached to other expanders, disk drives, and other hosts. An important characteristic of Expanders is their ability to aggregate bandwidth by combining multiple physical links into a "Wide" port. These wide ports can function as intelligent switches and can independently send commands across one physical path with data being returned over a different physical path. This increases the complexity of SAS test and debug because it requires users to monitor multiple links concurrently to record all DWORDs associated with a single SCSI transaction. The usage of expanders also allows for usage of a storage concept called Zoning. Zoning allows administrators to restrict access to devices by other devices. Applications of this include separating storage systems within a company by department.
Lower Cost Structure: Serial Attached SCSI also contains support for SATA drives in its storage environments. This allows support for both enterprise-class performance offered by SAS and low cost storage with SATA drives in the same system. Since the cost of the SAS infrastructure is expected to be comparable to SATA, it is likely that SAS will be the preferred interface. Since both SAS and SATA drives can be used in this environment, it will simplify and standardize the storage infrastructure, allowing for the ability to choose which drive will best fit individual storage needs.
Protocol Analysis
SAS Test and Verification: LeCroy's protocol analysis tools are designed from the ground up to address these unique characteristics of SAS including wide-links and Serial ATA interoperability. Sierra’s analysis and design suites are developed specifically for use with the SAS and SATA protocols, and provide extensive protocol decoding, expert error analysis, and complete user support when decoding and viewing the recorded traffic. This extensive protocol support, combined with the different traffic views, advanced triggering, data filtering, traffic generation, and error injection capability, allows engineers to rapidly become familiar with SAS- and SATA-specific issues, and quickly understand new issues the first time they encounter them. Every engineer becomes a protocol expert with the support of Sierra’s detailed expert analysis.
